Hurricane and Tropical Storm Safety Tips
Review Emergency Plans
Review current emergency plans to stay focused and avoid panic.
Monitor News Sources
- Continue monitoring NOAA Weather Radio and local news for the latest updates.
- Wait for a confirmation stating the hurricane has passed before leaving your home.
Check Power Supplies
- If there is no power, use flashlights instead of candles. If using candles, keep them away from flammable items.
- If the main breaker is plugged in, turn it off and wait for an electrician before using it again.
Prepare Food and Drink
- Eat and drink from a safe source (emergency supply).
- Discard food and water that may have been contaminated with flood or stormwater.
- Discard food with an unusual odor, color, or texture. When in doubt, discard.
- Never use contaminated water to brush teeth, prepare food, wash hands, or dishes.
Conduct an Interior Check-Up
- Exercise caution when checking damages.
- Never walk barefoot.
- Do not touch or use wet electrical devices.
- If a CO detector begins beeping, leave the premises immediately and call 911.
- Camp stoves, portable gasoline, or coal-burning equipment should never be used inside the home, basement, or garage.
- Document damages with photos or videos for insurance claims.
- Make a list of damaged or missing items.
- Check gas lines for damaged or broken lines. If found, stay away from the area and have it checked by the utility company.
- If unusual or shifting noises are heard in the property, leave immediately. Strange noises can indicate collapsing structures.
Conduct an Exterior Check-Up
- If the outside area is still flooded, stay inside.
- If being in or near floodwater is necessary, wear a life jacket.
- Always wash body parts immersed in floodwater with soap and water.
- Check for gas leaks, loose power lines, and structural damages.
- Be cautious of after-storm hazards including sharp or broken objects, damaged tree structures, and contaminated floodwaters.
Exercise Caution if Traveling is Necessary
- Stick to the emergency plan. Only deviate or improvise if necessary.
- Stay updated with road statuses. Do not drive through flooded areas. Cars or other vehicles can be swept away or stall in moving water.
- Stay away from damaged buildings and power lines.
- Report down power lines.
- Never enter a damaged or unstable building or structure. Wait for authorities to deem it is safe.
Practice COVID-19 Precautions
- Use COVID-19 protection items including hand sanitizer, cleaning materials and well-fitted masks to avoid exposure and infection.
- Practice social distancing.
- Wash hands frequently and avoid touching surfaces.
Organize Home Repairs
- Record expenses. Keep receipts and bills. Document any other expenses incurred.
- Do not make permanent repairs until Claim professionals have reviewed and approved.
- Create an inventory list of damaged items which includes item description, manufacturer name, brand name, age, and place/date of purchase.
- Wear protective clothing during repairs and if possible, work with a buddy system.
- Protect and secure broken or damaged doors and windows to avoid vandalization or burglary.
- If rooftops are broken or leaking, install roof tarping to create a temporary seal.
- If you suspect your home is unsafe due to storm damage, contact your insurance company immediately for temporary accommodations.
Care for Emotional Health
- Locate an expert or a community counselor to mentally recover from the disaster.
- Connect with family, friends, and others in your community
- Take care of yourself and your family members. Understand when and how to seek help if necessary.
